12 Days of... Day 4: The Recruiting Officer and The Importance of Being Earnest

Next up two comedies. Farquhar's Restoration Comedy "The Recruiting Officer" was performed in the Olivier Theatre in 1992, with Alex taking on the role of the recruiting officer, Captain Plume. I very much enjoyed seeing a comedy again. And in my notes of the time I wrote that Alex seemed to be enjoying himself too...

After "The Recruiting Officer" a later comedy, "The Importance of Being Earnest", in the Aldwych Theatre in the West End. A play so familiar it could easily go wrong. Joining Alex in the cast were Maggie Smith and Richard E. Grant though, and that made the difference. I also remember the wonderful, slightly surreal set.
