In 1989 Alex played SS Officer Kittel in the National Theatre production of Joshua Sobol's "Ghetto". A production to haunt you. Alex played a man who was on the surface charming, but basically cold and cruel. The play unsettled me and made me read up on what happened at Vilna.
The central performances, Kittel and Hayyah, played by Maria Friedman, brought the situation to life. The music was beautiful, in sharp contrast with the brutality of the play.
Michael Billington wrote in the Guardian: "Alex Jennings as Kittel also avoids all the usual warmovie cliches by playing the German officer as a smooth-faced figure who is parasitically dependent on the ghetto for spiritual sustenance".
