High Praise - With spoilers
The Telegraph has an article on Alex with a great many compliments:
"Lady In The Van director Nicholas Hytner, with whom Jennings has a longtime collaborative relationship, ranks Jennings among the pre-eminent actors of his generation and has hailed him as “a John Gielgud for the 21st century”.
With his greying curls, care-worn features and subversive twinkle, Jennings has a face that lends itself perfectly to period roles. He has also inhabited other real-life figures, including former US president George Bush Nazi architect Albert Speer, Dad’s Army actor John Le Mesurier and composer Benjamin Britten. He has said the key to playing such roles is to act, not impersonate becaue the characters “mustn’t become Spitting Image puppets”."
and
"Whether it’s on-stage or in supporting screen roles, Alex Jennings has spent more than three decades being consistently brilliant."
I can't quote more, the articles has spoilers of Unforgotten. If you still want to watch that and not know what happens, don't read this now!!

Frielfest Confession
"And Friel, who spent two years as a young man studying for the priesthood before an eventual retreat from Catholicism, might have enjoyed the fact that Jennings became surely the first person to have spoken the F-word four times in that parish hall. The actor told me afterwards that he had also committed a mild acting sin; the text specifies that Teddy drinks pale ale while reminiscing and, for the first time, the actor supped real alcohol while acting, an experiment he does not plan to repeat, but which did not diminish his characteristic precision and intelligence."

"The play that I walked out of at the interval
One I was in. It was Present Laughter at the National and it was before the interval. The safety curtain got stuck, so we never really got going. Everyone went home and the theatre was shut for something like three days."
He can't have been very lucky with this production, when I met him after a performance he had hurt his foot on stage and had to be hurried off..

A Very English Scandal - Reviews
Praise for Alex in the Guardian:
"Alex Jennings, brilliant as a devotee with a shadow on his soul"
"The era’s moves to legalise homosexuality and the European and immigration concerns playing out in the background give the broader moment resonance, but it is the superlative work from Jennings, Whishaw and above all Grant’s tour de force that holds it together, humanises and makes sense of it all. Bravo et encore. Bunnies can and will go to the Baftas, I’m sure."
Full review at The Guardian.
Metro has this interesting one:
"A special mention to Alex Jennings who, while in familiar territory, is unmatched in the art of smarmy delivery."
Read more in: Metro.
The Telegraph also gives the show a good revie:
"The opening scene, featuring symbolically raw and succulent steak tartare, introduced a brace of Liberal MPs slyly at ease with saucy-postcard sexuality. (The other one was Peter Bessell, played with spiffing joie de vivre by Alex Jennings). Theirs was a world in which proud new labels – “gay” – rubbed up against furtive old euphemisms: “musical”, “on the spear side”."

Alex reads "The Crown: The Official Companion" (or "The Inside History) by Robert Lacey as a new audiobook.
More information and a clip at Hypable.
According to the review:
"The audio version in particular makes those characters come alive. The audio book is narrated by Alex Jennings, who plays the Duke of Windsor in the Netflix series. His voice is easy to listen to, making the sometimes dense historical text feel manageable. His voices and accents make the stories dance.
I especially love when he reads excerpts from The New York Times. Jennings dons his best American accent — which is very accurate — and puts on an entirely new character for listeners to enjoy."

The Duke
The Telegraph says he "has a gift for adding an extra dimension to real-life characters, be it Alan Bennett, Anthony Eden or Stephen Spender, and that's very much the case here – his Duke is always far more than an impersonation of the uptight character we’ve all seen in grainy reels of Pathé news footage. Jennings held this episode together. Without him, it would have been a hollow examination of protocol and powerplay seen through a distant, dispassionate lens."

Jen's Review
Jen went to see "My Fair Lady" in Sydney and sent this review:
I would like to share some cheery thoughts about My Fair Lady.
This is an elegant production directed by Julie Andrews, who initially played Eliza Doolittle on Broadway. It has splendid production values and strong performances. The cast includes rising star Anna O’Byrne as Eliza and a who’s who of Australian theatre (Reg Livermore, Robyn Nevin, and Tony Llewellyn-Jones).
Alex has superb comic timing as Higgins, a prickly and peculiar character. I thought he brought a lot of laughs with his enunciation, singing and dancing in songs such as “Why Can’t the English?”, “The Rain in Spain” and “A Hymn to Him.” He also really connected with the audience and elicited sympathy in the more serious and reflective song, “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face.”
My Fair Lady recently broke a box office record (most tickets sold for a production at the Sydney Opera House), which would suggest that limited tickets are available until it closes 5th November. If you are able to get to Sydney by then, I would recommend booking a ticket to see Alex in this entertaining and fun show!
Thanks Jen!

MFL Review
"Heading the outstanding cast is British actor Alex Jennings, reprising a role that earned him an Olivier Award in 2003. His Higgins has deepened over the years from arrogant tyrant to slightly bewildered, prissy academic. Nowadays we would likely consider this misanthrope ‘on the spectrum’. One of Shaw’s keys is when Mrs Higgins refers to her son and Pickering as a “pretty pair of babies, playing with your live doll” and Jennings captures compellingly the curiously infantilised aspect of the man. As a theatrical technician, he is second to none, every line considered and connected to build and explore a complex human being. His lead-in to I’m an Ordinary Man reveals no railing misogynist but a fellow who has likely been burned somewhere along the line. His panegyric to the poetry of language really does inspire. The points at which we see his growing feelings for Eliza are beautifully plotted, making Jennings' Higgins seductively sympathetic at times. The songs are delivered with confidence and finesse, just on the voice enough to prove he has the notes, while relishing the text in a bravura display of Lerner-esque acerbic patter. When it comes, I’ve Grown Accustomed to her Face takes us to a place of considerable pathos and loneliness – just as it should."

Alex on Women
Alex talks to the Sydney Morning Herald on all he knows about women...

Sydney Opening Night
There is another picture gallery at Broadway World.
The Sydney Morning Herald gives the production four stars and has this to say about Alex:
"Jennings demonstrates complete mastery as Professor Higgins. His diction and clarity is outstanding, his timing impeccable. It seems more Harrison's Higgins than his own, at times, but his crisp energy and charisma lifts the portrayal far above the level of impersonation."

Higgins Interview
He is looking forward to this time down under:
“And I’ve never been to Australia before so it’s a big treat,” he adds, saying that his wife, landscape gardener Lesley Moors, will come with him while their two children, now in their 20s, and his “dear, old Dad” will also visit."
Not too sure I agree with all his opinions:
"Now 59, Jennings thinks there will be differences in his portrayal to when he last played the role.
“Since I last did it my singing has grown. When I was doing Willie Wonka I worked with a brilliant singing teacher called Mary King and she has given me confidence and brought on my singing,” he says.
“And I’m older – though I’m not as old as Rex Harrison was when he finished doing it. But there is going to be a bigger age difference between me and Eliza than there was when I last did it so any sense of romance would perhaps be less appropriate.”
Thanks to Uli!
